Creating God Space Home Study

Doug Pollock’s book God Space is a great read. I’ve been developing some thoughts on the subject for a few years. Over the next few weeks I’ll be writing explaining the best practices of outreach.

If you’d like to develop your outward focused skills I’d invite you to pop in. Read, and practice.

Creating God Space Where God Things Can Happen.

What is God space?

God space is a tangible space that can created by faith. God space is an atmosphere, or an environment, where God’s presence, goodness, kindness, knowledge, and power
are present to nurture faith in another human being.

Opening the idea, I like to call the points Clues. Clues are hints, or helps to guide a person along the way. Creating God Space is a discovery, or a process, that can be developed and created with practice. Each Clue is given to help you explore, discover a fresh facet of faith.

Assumptions. I assume we all have a world view. How we gain our world view has to do with our upbringing, culture, influences, education, environment, and experiences.

I was raised in a Doctors home. I always had more than enough. My wife on the other hand was raised by a caring and loving mother but was raised in poverty. Our world views are different. I see life though a different lens. Different doesn’t necessary mean wrong. My world view 'just is', yet changes as I gain knowledge and experience.

I also lived in Scotland for most of my adult work life. Therefore, my world view is probably much different than someone who has only lived in the USA. I’ve also had the privilege to travel to Singapore, New Zealand, Germany, Australia, Canada, Mexico, England and Ireland. My travel experiences have broadened my world view.

All of us view life through our own lens.

Years ago someone developed this picture below.
What do you see?
Do you see an old woman or young lady?

Usually people see one or the other.  A. The young lady is wearing a hat with a feather, she has a small nose and a sharp cheek line.  B. The old lady is also wearing a hat but also has a long nose which is the young ladies cheek line.

Have you ever seen the arrow in FedEx logo? Many have seen the Logo, but have never seen the arrow. Now that you see the arrow, you see differently.  Our world view with new information, in the same way, changes.

So how do you view your world? Do you see life differently? Do you see what others do not?

I also have another assumption. It's based on a different worldview. It's the world view that views life from a different perspective. It's the world view of the Kingdom of God. I live life in the Kingdom now, waiting for the not yet. I do experience life in the overlap where the Kingdom comes to earth. This I call God space where God things happen.

People are either moving toward faith, or moving away from faith, or they are on pause thinking contemplating faith.  Many people aren’t even thinking about larger issues life and faith.

Our decision to intersect another life creating God space is all important. Our decisions do determine destiny. Our destiny, and the destiny of the people within our sphere of influence.

Many people aren't aware that they can make a difference in someones life. Usually people are just living life the best they can. Seeking to do all the things that make up their daily living. They are just under the normal pressures of life that keep the tread mill rolling. Time is not on their side. But just stop and think for a moment. What could you accomplish? What life could you change for the better? Where could you begin to invest your time, energy and dollars to make a difference?

This is a great video that asks the questions in 1 minute.

Community FunFest Block Party Satuday June 25th 2011

Community FunFest Block Party

This weekend we will be going to Glennburn Green Apartments. We'll be joining together with Crossroads Vineyard to throw a party for the people we serve. Hotdogs, hamburgers, carnival games, face painting, crafts, prizes, bouncy castle and snow cones all for Free!

Flyers went out today to the people we serve during our Food for Huber Outreach. This is our 8th year for this event at Glennburn Green Apartments. We have great relationship with the apartment staff and they are very helpful.

Timing is Everything
What's a bubble principle?...often I have a check in my spirit, or an idea that springs to mind, or a new ministry opportunity that comes to my attention. I've learned over the years to let things bubble, peculate for a while until there is some clarity... this year we shifted the date to this coming weekend.

(side note when planning an outreach always go to the location of the outreach to scope out the land, the layout, where to park etc. one time I booked a car wash at a location and didn't bother to go and see the site, when the team arrived a bulldozer had bulldozed the site...lesson learned.) We then went to the apartment complex and met the manager... as usual they were aok and on board for the FunFest...and handed out the 200 flyer's we made to the residents.

Tuesday of next week, we'll be...gathering supplies, cleaning all games, purchasing hotdogs, hamburgers, buns, booking the bouncy castle, ordering groceries from Sam's, and generally staging the materials for this coming Saturday...

It takes about 10 to 15 hours behind the scenes to pull off this event...

We recruit during the services for about 3 weeks out...  we will have people from Crossroads...plus people from our Vineyard. It takes min 65 people to make the FunFest successful....(We don't want too many people from our side that make the balance more us than the number of people we serve... it feels strange to the people who attend.)

Here is a link to the photos we took from a FunFest...

Elizabeth Worms ... Great Notes!

Here are the notes from Elizabeth our Executive Pastor and Connections Guru when she spoke to our new Ministry Partners, in January. Well worth the read.

True growth happens when we become engaged with God's plan. God's plan is basically, Know God, Show God. Developing a rhythm in life is all important. It's like breathing. Breathing in and breathing out. Or living in, gaining strength, energy, insight, and grace, then living out to share your strength, energy, insight and grace in your world.

The below illustration shows balance. Believing is as important as knowing where we Belong, as is where and who we are to Bless. Spiritual growth incubates in this environment.

At times there are seasons of Believing where we need to spend time developing faith, relationship with Jesus, and dependence upon the Holy Spirit. Other times we need develop our Belonging by strengthening our relationships with others. Other times we need to develop our spirit of Blessing and go out of ourselves to bless others.
Quick Connect is in the blessing arena. Security comes when we know what we believe, and discovering whose we are. and with whom we are in relationship with. We bless because of our beliefs, and join the adventure of expanding God's Kingdom by serving with others.

What is Service / Partnership and how is it Different from Volunteering?
·      Volunteering:
o      A “good” thing – helpful, necessary – philanthropy
o      Usually the volunteer is a “worker bee” who does whatever the ones in charge ask
o      Often no sense of ownership in the vision or project
o      Sometimes wind up with “round pegs” in “square holes”
o      Sometimes done out of a sense of obligation (sometimes guilt)
o      Often simply a way to “fill slots” in existing programs
o      People “help”; staff lead and do

·      Service in the biblical sense:
o      Exercising your unique giftedness in service for the Kingdom of God
o      Growing in faith and maturity through the exercise of your gifts
o      Integral aspect of personal discipleship
o      Involves discipling and mentoring others to assist them in the discovery and development of their gifts
o      An aspect of worship (Romans 12:1b)
o      Jesus said, “I did not come to be served but to serve . . .”
o      People are ministry partners with the pastors and staff, not volunteers – pastors/staff help; people lead and do

Goal of Quick Connect
Our goal is to give you opportunities to try out different opportunities for service through the Vineyard, so that you can experience the God-ordained benefits of service that we just mentioned and so that you can participate in advancing God’s Kingdom. Important note: we don’t want you to be round pegs in square holes! If you find that the particular ministry that you’ve signed up for is not your cup of tea, then the Connections Ministry will help you discover your gifts and passion and re-direct you to another opportunity.

Core Biblical Basis for Service
·      Ephesians 4:11-16 (Read the passage)
o      Role of pastors and ministry staff/leaders:  equippers
o      Role of people:  exercise service
o      Purpose:  build up Body of Christ
o      Result:  unity in faith, knowledge of Christ, spiritual maturity
·      “Equip”
o      Really cool word! New Testament written in Greek and translated into English and other languages. The Greek word that we translate “equip” literally means “to mend nets.”
Disciples and Jesus – Jesus called disciples while they were “preparing” their nets (Mark 1:19) – make ready
Can also be translated “set a broken bone” – idea of restore/restoration
Illustrate with fishing net (tell story from beach on Tortola and demonstrate how net works) – mending a net restores it to its intended purpose
·      Purpose

o      Humanity’s purpose = to glorify God
“In him (Christ) we were also chosen . . . in order that we . . . might be for the praise of his glory” (Eph 1:11,12)
o      Purposeful living = discovering a sense of personal purpose or life mission (God given) (Rom 12:1b). Biblical examples: John the Baptist, Jesus, Jeremiah, Paul
o      You are fearfully and wonderfully made! (Psalm 139:14)
o      “Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given us.” (Rom 12:4-6a)
o      “For you are Christ’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which He prepared in advance for you to do.” (Eph 2:10)
o      Back to “equip” – that fishing net has purpose, it’s intended to catch fish. It also has potential because of how it was designed and crafted.
o      YOU have unique God-given purpose and potential!
Example: an apple. Where is the potential in this apple? It’s in the seed! The smallest component of the tree. Isn’t that amazing? If you think that you are small and insignificant, maybe lacking in purpose and potential, you are wrong! An apple seed, when planted in the right conditions, grows up into a tree that bears fruit, and that tree has the potential through its seeds to become an enormous orchard! So it is in the Body of Christ!
You have a unique, God-given SHAPE! You have Spiritual Gifts; a “Heart” or passion for particular people-groups, ministries, causes; Abilities and talents; Personality; Experiences – all that and more combines to uniquely “fit” you for particular ministries
·      SHAPE class coming in January!
o      God gives each and every believer a spiritual gift or gift mix
9But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. (1 Pet 2:9,10) – each person is a “priest”
10Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms. (1 Pet 4:10) – each one has a gift
Read: 1 Cor. 12:4-20 – (each part of the Body is essential)

Ministry, or Christian Service:
·      Putting hands and feet to our faith!
·      Triggers spiritual growth
o      Spiritual growth occurs through many things:  Bible study, prayer, worship, fellowship, sacraments, other disciplines.
o      Yet, true spiritual growth is activated as we serve!
o      James 1:22-27; 2:14-17

The Example of Gideon
·      Summarize Judges 6 and then read:
When the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon, he said, "The LORD is with you, mighty warrior."
13 "But sir," Gideon replied, "if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our fathers told us about when they said, 'Did not the LORD bring us up out of Egypt?' But now the LORD has abandoned us and put us into the hand of Midian."
14 The LORD turned to him and said, "Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian's hand. Am I not sending you?"
15 "But Lord , [a] " Gideon asked, "how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family."
16 The LORD answered, "I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites together." (Judges 6:12-16)
·
God addresses Gideon as “mighty warrior,” but Gideon is hiding out in a winepress, threshing his grain there because he is afraid of the Midianites! I can just see Gideon looking around over his shoulder saying “Who, Me??!!!”

·      How many “mighty warriors” are here tonight? Have you sold yourself short because you feel unworthy or lacking in response to God’s call? Receive your God-call tonight and walk tall as the “mighty warrior” He has created you to be.

And the whole Body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love as each part does its work.

BBQ Reflections

a great day! peace reigned and the weather was clear. This year people were gathering about an hour before the food was served. It was great to see people sitting around talking, laughing and being a community. We've come a long way. I think each year builds upon the other and somehow establishes a safe haven. Everyone had a good time and we served BBQ sandwiches until we ran out.

Our helpers were geared up and worked hard to ensure a fun yet efficient environment.

Establishing credibility within a community takes time.
Serving our way into the heart of our community requires consistency.
Developing relationships with people builds trust.
Sharing and being the good news bears fruit.

BBQ Dayton Style

The BBQ started a few years ago when a few guys asked themselves the question? Why can't we serve the best to the least? Thus began A Pretty Good BBQ.

Each May hundreds of people show up to eat some pretty good BBQ, hang out, visit, and be part of our inner-city community. We usually have a bunch of great guys and gals helping and serving up the meal. This Sat. at Beavercreek the guys will get together to cook some BBQ, staying all night smokin pork, and making sure the BBQ is cooked just right.

Sunday we'll take all the BBQ downtown to the Dayton Campus and serve up BBQ, Chips, Pop and Oreo cookies to the people gathered. OinkADoodleMoo is in part donating 200lbs of pork, and their great smokey sauce.

As always we need an army of servers to make sure things run smoothly and everyone has a great time. If you'd like to serve, meet at Dayton Campus 10:30am for set up, or about 12pm for wrapping sandwiches and getting the place set for the crowds that show up at 1pm. We're making enough for 500 people.

Ever Have A Church Service Under Pressure?

If you are a church planter or a church leader, occasionally what can go wrong, will go wrong, and at the wrong moment. How you handle the pressure is all important.

Yesterday, at our smaller downtown church plant campus our tech people didn't show up.

Pressure points: Time pressure, Lack of skill, Unable to find needed items, Having to be in front of people to do announcements and communion, Having slides for songs, Having slide notes for the speaker who happened to be the senior pastor, and Having the sound up an running.

1. All of our media is on a Mac with great new software. Pressure point, we didn't know how to access the media or run the software. My side kick is younger and more intuitive and figured how to load software and get things up and running by 9:55am. We started at 9:40am. The meeting starts at 10am.

2. The hand held mike's battery had dissipated over the week. Someone forgot to turn off the mike. We found a battery, got the mike up and running at 9:58pm.

3. The main projector and the large screen TV were not turned on. We had to find the key in the office to open the tech cupboard, turned them on by 9:45am.

4. The sound guy wasn't there. So we pushed buttons, moved sliders and adjusted the sound for the band and had pre-service music playing, were ready by 9:50am.

At 9:59am we started the pre-worship video.

10:00am we stepped on stage and started the meeting. We were saved by a tech person who happened to be serving coffee. The cavalry arrived at 10:05am

Oh, of course we also had several people asking us questions, wanting answers for other issues when we were scrambling.

One lady arrived with a crisis of her own, she wanted me to give her some money to wash her clothes, I calmly mentioned we do groceries, prayer and care but we don't do money. I encouraged her to stay until the end of the meeting for a talk.

In the end it was a good day. No one knew we were under the gun.

How we handled the pressure...

  • We were steady.
  • We were focused.
  • We acted with grace.
  • We didn't act like it was the end of the world.
  • We defused the pressure by extending to grace to people around us.
  • We affirmed our care for our tech team who arrived, they are good people.
  • When the crisis was over we spoke to the people who needed our attention during the pressure moment.

Tip:
People are always more important than tasks or things. Some leaders would begin to be emotionally ramped up, begin the blame game, then diss their tech team in front of the crowd gathered. This is always wrong. A little humor can go a long way in such situations.

Taking a deep breath to pause, extend grace and love behind the scenes is always right. Yes, sometimes the conversation needs to be to the point, but the conversation should always mixed with grace and love. Not casting blame but focusing on the people and their emotional well being during a miss-step.

A great book, Don't Sweat The Small Stuff, the point, It's all small stuff.

How we are going to handle miss-tech steps in the future?

  • The main leaders are going to have a tutorial on the new software... just in case.
  • We are going to develop a start to finish systems instructions sheet to let those who have to step in know where things are and what to do. Titled In Case of Emergency Break Glass.
  • We are going to recruit people for all the other visible pull-the-weekend-off areas.
  • We are going to have a go to person on call each week... just in case.
  • We're going to keep focused on grace.
  • We're gong to be grateful for all we have. (a pastor visiting us from Africa was amazed by our post hole digger, he doesn't have one. he also doesn't have all the tech gadgets we use to communicate the good news.)
Pressure you always have, a grace extending person you always be. Yoda

Good time with Doug Pollock

We had a great session today with author of God Space.

How do you keep the mission alive instead of keeping the machinery going?

How do we re-engage the dis-engaged?

Your turf or go to their turf?

Can you listen and discover their reality?

We engage one touch, one conversation at a time.

We create safe space.

Understand God is always at work to awaken a heart.

Conversations help people discover who they are and what they believe.

Context reveals their context.

Acknowledge by listening.

Trust is gained by having genuine motives. I care, really, I care.

Change your words. Change your world.

Good questions help us understand a persons background, struggles, passion and belief system.

Engaging means fully aware, fully focused, fully in the game.
